**Note that all
rescues/shelters in Dupage County have clauses in
their contracts.. requiring right of first refusal
if you need to give up their cat. For cats from
ADOPT, Naperville Humane or others. you must contact
them first for placement. No other rescue or group
will accept placement of your cat until this first
step is made**
If you have a
found a STRAY, PURRS and many other rescues do
not take in strays off the street. This is because
there is a required 7 days waiting period for
strays in DuPage. You have 3 choices with a stray
animal.
1. Take the cat to
any vet, any shelter or PURRS event (any weekend)
and have the cat scanned for a microchip to see if
an owner can be located
2. Notify DuPage AC
and whatever city AC you are from AND NEARBY ONES
AND file a FOUND PET REPORT that you have
found this cat (this is where people are going to
check for their cat.. do NOT rely just on your
signs.. though signs are GOOD). Wait for 7 days and
THEN contact a rescue for placement.
3. You may also
take the cat to DuPage AC.. however space may be
limited or to Naperville AC (if found in
Naperville).. where the cat is more likely to be
transferred out to rescue if an owner is not found.
You may also
file a lost report with us.. we (and many other
rescues) get calls from OWNERS whose cats are not
chipped.. looking for their cat.
If you have found
an BADLY INJURED STRAY .. please USE the cell
phone for emergency help. 630-815-4520
If you have found a
stray with OBVIOUS SIGNS OF ABANDONMENT (left
in a house with a bag of food etc).. please send us
the same information above under owner give up with
the date of find.
If you have found
KITTENS LESS THAN 4 WEEKS OLD (blue eyes.
shaky walk).. please call HELP in St Charles or PAWS
and PURRS in Oswego. PURRS is not set up to take
bottle fed kittens. (#s coming soon.. but
available with a quick web search)
If you have
found kittens and they are FRIENDLY and OUTGOING or
are LIKELY to become FRIENDLY and OUTGOING (and
you can foster), please contact Naperville Humane,
ADOPT, PAWS and PURRS. PURRS does not generally take
in kittens from the public. Why do we not take
kittens? Because we have agreements with other
organizations to intake their kittens and the # of
groups above taking kittens from the public means
that you can likely find placement elsewhere without
an issue. (#s coming soon.. but available with a
quick web search)
If you have found
kittens who are NOT FRIENDLY and NOT LIKELY TO
BECOME FRIENDLY or a FERAL CAT, please contact
Feral Fixers..
www.feralfixers.org 630-881-3977 for assistance
with Trap Neuter Return.
Please
note that all relinquishments require a
relinquishment fee. $100 if not spayed or
neutered. $50 the cat is spayed or neutered. We
require cats to be current on vaccinations as well.
If they are not. you can have them done on your own,
or we charge $25 for that.
Income exceptions
or special waivers can apply.
Please note:
calling around asking if shelters 'Have room?" is
not an effective strategy in getting your cat
placement. Most shelters run full... all the
time.. however most shelters are intaking regularly. Asking if
a shelter has room is like your boss asking you if
you are busy You may just get a reflexive
answer. PURRS plans its intake 2 weeks out..
however what makes PURRS unique is we have a list of preapproved adopters looking for cats we currently
do not have. If your cat fits one of those on the
list. We can intake the cat immediately. If he/she
does not fit on the list, PURRS or other groups may
be able to intake shortly, but we really can not
make that decision without knowing what kind of
intake we are dealing with. Does that make sense?
Presenting clear information on your cat gives
shelters the information they need to intake and
your cat the best chance of finding a new home
quickly. I mean maybe the shelter gets your email
with COMPLETE information and a CUTE PICTURE...
tells you they are full and then an adopter comes in
the next day and says "Hey do you have any (insert
your cat here)" and the shelter says.. "you know
what we do not now but are about to intake one
(description of your cat here)" and calls YOU and
your cat finds a NEW GREAT HOME. (PURRS just
this week (10/27) pulled in 7 adult cats and 8
kittens.. all went to new homes within 2 days
because of our list and detailed information on the
cats). Make your cat stand out too for us (does he
play fetch. have some cute trick or make a perfect
lap warmer..) Descriptions like that helps us SELL
the cat to a potential adopter and move him or her
quicker into his new great home. You know your cat
best, help us help him.
With that said,
PURRS (specifically) supports mostly DuPage AC,
Feral Fixers and Naperville AC for intake. Other
shelters take a higher percentage of owner intake
than we do. Regardless, it will help you to
understand how the process works.
Please note we are not able to take calls
on intake. All intake
requests are handled via email once full information
is received.
